Vel’oh!’s second anniversary
(18/03/2010)
Luxembourg City’s self-service bicycle-hire system now two years old
On 21 March 2010, the vel’oh! system of bicycles available for public hire in Luxembourg’s capital city celebrated its 2nd birthday, and the date will also mark further extensions of the network. In order to meet the great demand from users who wish to get around all areas of the city by vel’oh!, the network is being extended into two additional districts, Gasperich and Weimershof. There will be seven new stations, meaning that from this month onwards there will be 54 stations making available a total of 496 bikes.
Since vel’oh! was launched, it has proved its worth, with 4,021 long-term subscribers signed up at the beginning of this spring, as against 2,910 a year ago. So far, the bikes have been hired on a total of 260,000 occasions. Another impressive figure is that the users have travelled over a million kilometres since the scheme started!
The strong growth in demand shows that this simple and inexpensive way of getting around the city has become a perfectly integrated part of the sustainable mobility concept for Luxembourg City. Among the reasons for this success is the efforts undertaken by the City authorities in terms of urban improvement and extending the network of cycling paths, which obviously help promote bicycle use within the city.
