Cycle paths
The city's "Bicycle" concept intends to create a climate that is favourable to the use of bicycles in an urban environment.
Numerous measures aimed at promoting cycling have been elaborated and implemented. In particular, the existing cycling infrastructures have been extended in order to create a continuous and coherent basic network. The various quarters are connected by safe and comfortable cycle paths. The basic network is composed of 14 main routes with an additional 15 secondary routes that will link all the equipment and important sites.
Major differences in levels and often steep slopes in the town are a particular problem for cyclists. Technical and constructive solutions have been proposed to overcome these differences in levels: in particular, the installation of a new lift between the Pfaffenthal and the upper town, or footbridges for pedestrians and cyclists only, linking the Hamm quarter to the Kirchberg plateau.
As well as creating cycle paths, the fundamental elements of the concept will include the installation of appropriate signs at strategic junctions, bus lanes used as multi-purpose lanes if they are used infrequently by buses and reduced waiting time for cyclists at lights.
The entire concept will be implemented over a period of 10 years.
